Weekend road closures: Highway 2 and beyond
Jul 20, 2018, 8:02 PM
A warm, dry weekend can only mean one thing: road construction. And since those are rare in these parts, construction crews are taking full advantage and cramming as much work as possible into the weekends.
Highway 2
For the second weekend in a row, crews will close westbound lanes of Highway 2 between SR 204 and Homeacres Road for a repaving project. Weather postponed this project for five weekends, and this will be the second of six weekend closures. All lanes westbound are closed until 4 a.m. on Monday.
The detour route will be on 20th Street SE under the trestle. WSDOT says to expect delays on SR 9, Hwy 96, and SR 528.
“With the first weekend out of the way, travelers now know what to expect when we shut down this stretch of US 2,” said Washington State Department of Transportation Project Engineer Mark Sawyer. “We need them to keep planning ahead and finding different ways to get around, because we still have five more closures scheduled this summer.”
WSDOT released a drone video of work done last weekend.
Weekend events
And if that’s not enough, there are some pretty big events happening around town. This weekend is Bite of Seattle, Capitol Hill Block Party, the West Seattle Grand Parade, a Sounders-Whitecaps game, and two Mariners games.
Monday: 9 stretches of 7 highways
Starting on Monday on SR 9 in Skagit County, crews will add a new protective highway surface to nines stretches of seven highways in Island, Skagit, Snohomish and Whatcom counties, according to WSDOT. Crews will add a new top layer of coated gravel and oil to the roadways.
