Man on Market Street tells pregnant woman he will kill her baby

Ballard resident Amanda hasn’t let nearly eight months of pregnancy stop her from being active — every morning, she walks from her home to work on Market Street. On Monday morning, however, the routine walk took a turn for the worse.

Amanda was passing a man on Market Street who appeared to be addressing her, but having headphones in, she did not hear what he was saying.

“I could hear him muttering something, and he was talking to me, so I pulled my headphones out,” she told KIRO Radio’s Dori Monson. Amanda couldn’t understand what he said at first, but then caught the word “baby.”

“He was like, ‘I’m gonna kill your baby, I’m gonna kill your baby,'” she said.

Shocked and terrified, Amanda hurried to work, where her manager comforted her as she cried. They both watched through the front window as the man passed by the business.

Amanda did not call the police, believing based on past experiences that there would not be much point.

“I work at a financial institution, and already we have fraudsters come in and they don’t come,” she said. “So I thought that they would not come for something like a comment made on the street.”

Amanda said that she has changed her life to account for the dangers on the Ballard streets. On Tuesday, she walked a different route to work to avoid coming into contact with the man who had threatened her.

“I’ve really adjusted my lifestyle — I don’t go out at night by myself … I’m very aware of what’s going on around me,” she said.

To keep herself and her coming child safe, Amanda is getting out of town and moving to the Poulsbo area.

“I made that decision when we got pregnant, that I didn’t want to raise a baby in the city,” she said.

*Amanda’s last name has been left out for personal safety.
