Crystal Claflin wades past tents and through water in Nickelsville, a homeless encampment, where a day earlier a heavy rain and windstorm had partially flooded the camp, Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, in Seattle.

Swamped by record rains, Nickelsville needs our help

The Seattle homeless encampment known as "Nickelsville" was devastated by flooding after record rainfall this week. A large 30-foot wide, knee-deep puddle flooded at least 30 tents.

A donated pump had drained much of the water by mid-morning Tuesday. Residents moved tents on top of pallets and created a make-shift path of more pallets and wood scraps to try to keep dry.

KING 5's Meg Coyle reported on Nickelsville residents' plight on KIRO's Ron and Don Show Tuesday.

"The land they currently occupy is just next door to the Waste Management transfer station. It is land that is bowl shaped, surrounded by a berm. The water has no place to go but right down to the bottom of that bowl," said Coyle.

Nickelsville residents have lost nearly everything. They need new items to replace things they lost - like tents - and supplies to keep them warm as they weather the rest of this storm.

"It reminds me of when I went to Haiti," said Ron. "These are the type of folks you really want to help out - and believe it or not, a pair of dry socks could be the difference."

If you would like to help, recommended donations include:

-Dry clothing

-Tents (Any size)

-Blankets

-Tarps

-Firewood

-Boots

-Batteries

Nickelsville is located at 7116 West Marginal Way SW.

After hearing about the Nickelsville flood, callers to the Ron & Don Show soon began pledging to drop off tents, warm clothes and firewood.

Audrey from West Seattle told the guys, "I drive by Nickelsville every morning on my way to work, so tomorrow morning I am stopping to drop off some batteries and some clean, dry socks."

Rich in Seattle offered his expertise in the kitchen. "We are going to make a ton of breakfast burritos and take them down to Nickelsville on Thursday to hand out."

Even Solomon Metalwala, father of missing baby Sky Metalwala, called to offer to donate a Thanksgiving dinner to the people of Nickelsville.

Don asked that you reserve judgement of the people of Nickelsville. "There are many reasons for homelessness. All I know is they are our brothers, they are our sisters, and some of them are standing on pallets tonight and they lost everything they have. For some of them, that's not a lot."

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT BEFORE YOU MAKE CONTRIBUTIONS: As we open our pockets to do a good thing and make ourselves feel good, please keep the following facts in mind: ---------------------------- The American Red Cross President and CEO Marsha J. Evans' salary for the year was $651,957 plus expenses MARCH OF DIMES It is called the March of Dimes because only a dime for every 1 dollar is given to the needy. Pallets
I can take down a truck load of dry 8 foot pallets. We have them at our shop and my truck can haul about 6. Would that help?

Ron and Don, you have gone too far. These are people living in tents because they choose not to be productive, contributing members of society. You are being taken. You want to do some real help? Go to Children's Hospital, 3rd Floor, Cancer Unit. It is freakin' close. Those kids are going through pure torture with their parents watching, hearts breaking. Also, the games and toys are often broken or need replacements. If you are there for days or weeks, in isolation, playing Candy Land with your baby girl, with all the pieces, somehow becomes important! :-)

    Batteries
I have a WHOLE BUCKET (Hundreds) of brand new AA batteries. I thought they could be useful in flashlights, radios, etc. Stopping by this afternoon to drop them off. It's dark more than it's light here these days. Kind of a bummer not to be able to see. We take lights and electricity for granted. Thanks Ron & Don for helping us all to light the way.

    Not really
The batteries are headed for the recycle bin anyway after a single use in broadcast wireless mic. I drive right past there on my way home. This will take me ZERO effort, literally, and it might help someone. Haters gonna hate...

    Really?
Well, you can meet me down there if you like and I can give the bucket of batteries to you in front of them and you can lecture them on how they shouldn't get them because it enables them and then take them to the recycler yourself. Either way, I get rid of a whole bucket of batteries. :-)

Maybe they'll just float away, out into Elliot Bay
what they NEED?!? SO, just freeload on society, then when that gets too tough, they call on hard working tax-payers to bail them out with handouts? Yeah, maybe it’s just the conservative in me, but when I run into adversity, I knuckle down and take responsibility of my own problems, not sit around and expect someone else to. And to top it off, now they have a girl standing on the corner with a sign “Pregnant, homeless anything helps”. come on people, doesn’t anyone see the problem here? Seattle liberals should know more than anyone else that life is all about appearances, and it appears those people choose to be non-contributing members of society, but expect society to contribute to them.

Donate To Groups That Give Hands UP, Not Handouts!
If people, Ron and Don included, really want to help the homeless and down and out you should donate to charities with known track records of results with the underclasses in the Seattle area. The Union Gospel Mission comes to mind. A soggy tent city is not a solution. These people need help, but they also need some discipline in their lives if they are to get out of their situation. A social service organization should open up a dormitory style home with rules and curfews. What Ron and Don want to do is only enabling dysfunctional lifestyles.
