Ron says…
When we lost the Super Bowl on Sunday, it felt like I got kicked in the chest. It reminded me of breaking up with my junior high girlfriend. I felt that hollow feeling that you feel in your chest.
My wife who was at the Super Bowl party just to eat the nachos and eat the cupcakes with the 12s on it asked me: ‘What’s wrong?’ She just didn’t understand how emotionally invested you get in the outcome of a game like that.
Listen: Pete Carroll on the Seahawks’ final play
Then, all over the internet, the overwhelming message was “that was the worst call in the history of the NFL,” and I had to just tell people to stop it. So I posted the following message on The Ron & Don Show Facebook page:
“Stop with the “that was the worst call in the history of the NFL” nonsense. That is who they are. They take risks. Sometimes it doesn’t work out. That’s why people love sports, you have to earn it. The other guy made an amazing play. Hawks score there and everyone says, “what a genius call! They thought we were going to Lynch, and he threw it.”
Here’s the thing, we could probably generate right now 25 to 50 risky play calls that the Seahawks made this year, and most of the time they worked. That is the DNA of this team. They take risks. They take shots. Russell Wilson is shot taker and Pete Carroll is a shot taker. They are not conservative guys.
They showed that even in this game, at the end of the first half. With six seconds left, they throw a touchdown pass to Chris Matthews who no one has ever heard of.
They take risks. They are not conservative. On the upside, you get these amazing moments of euphoria where everyone at your party is high-fiving going, ‘Chris Matthews, I’ve never even heard of this guy.’ You get those moments and then sometimes it doesn’t work.
The Patriots team was well coached. They had a game plan that they executed very well and they overcame a 10-point deficit. They also have defensive coaches that had seen that formation and knew that play and you had a Patriot that said I recognize this, I know what they’re going to do, I’m going to make a play and he made a play.
That is what happened. Everyone was saying, ‘Why don’t you run Marshawn every play?’ It’s not a lock that Marshawn is going to get in from the 1-yard line. This year he reportedly had five opportunities on the 1-yard line and he got it only one time.
The Seahawks had a plan. They executed their plan and it didn’t work.
But it’s time to stop saying it’s the worst call in NFL history.
