You can’t get a driver’s license or a license for your vehicle between Friday and Monday as the Washington State Department of Licensing shuts down to upgrade its computer systems.

All vehicle and driver licensing offices and counters are closing for the extended weekend, cutting off drivers and boat owners from a variety of services.
“This new system will allow us to improve a customer’s experience in our office, combining our vehicle field system with our driver field system so we can more carefully take care of personal information,” said Christine Anthony with the Department of Licensing.
“You won’t be able to renew a driver’s license, or vehicle tabs, or get decals for vessels,” she said. “You won’t be able to do a whole lot.”
It’s not just getting or renewing a drivers license. This means that drivers won’t be able to register a vehicle or vessel (boats) through Monday, Sept. 3. You can’t get an ID card, report the sale of a vehicle, or register to vote online.
However, you can go to the Secretary of State’s website, print out a voter registration form, and mail it in.
KIRO 7 reports that drivers are still on the hook if they are pulled over for expired tabs during this time.
The Department of Licensing computer system will be back up and, hopefully, running normally Tuesday, Sept. 4.
