The experts who specialize in monitoring Russian propaganda will tell you that Facebook and Google’s fake news filters aren’t going to protect us. Because propaganda isn’t about spreading fake news – it’s about spreading carefully-selected real news in a way that makes people want to fight each other.

“They tell the truth in a way that leaves out certain important facts, perspectives, contexts,” said Brad Patty, Thursday at the Heritage Foundation.

Patty is a former adviser to the US Army in Iraq.

“What the Russians do is they go and they find legitimate issues — like the Black Lives Matter and Blue Lives Matter thing — and we really need to find a way to talk through these arguments, rather than fight about these arguments. That’s the way to get past Russian propaganda more than anything else.

And then there’s Dr. Stephen Blank.

“I would take the war home to Putin,” he says.

Dr. Blank is a former instructor at the Army War College, who says we ought to hit Putin with a little truth-based propaganda of our own.

“No reason why, for example, we can’t find out where his bank accounts are and where his money is and go public with how much he and his buddies have stolen from the Russian people, whose condition gets worse day-by-day,” he said. “True information is a force multiplier.”

Seeing Putin’s finances might be almost as interesting as seeing that other guy’s finances.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?
