Peanut butter sickens two in Washington; recall expands
on October 8, 2012 @ 5:54 am (Updated: 9:02 am - 10/8/12 )Two people in Washington are among the dozens who have gotten sick from a suspected salmonella outbreak tied to peanut butter.
The FDA is expanding its recall, now saying Kirkland brand peanut butter sold at Costco may also be contaminated with the bacteria.
"For most people it's just a very uncomfortable nasty disease," says Donn Moyer with the Washington State Department of Health. "You have diarrhea, sometimes it's bloody. You can have a fever. And some people do vomit. And if you already have health conditions and you are frail or young and old those things can hit you harder."
A total of 240 products made by the New Mexico-based Sunland company are now included in the recall.
The Peanut Butter and related products are commonly sold at stores ranging from Target to Whole Foods.
The expanded recall added several varieties of flavored butters and spreads, including Sunland's Thai Ginger Butter, Chocolate Butter and Banana Butter.
Brand names included are Target's Archer Farms, Safeway's Open Nature, Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Late July, Heinen's, Joseph's, Natural Value, Naturally More, Peanut Power Butter, Serious Food, Snaclite Power, Sprouts Farmers Market, Sprouts, Sunland and Dogsbutter.
