Washington Powerball winners won't be retiring on their winnings
on November 29, 2012 @ 2:46 pm (Updated: 3:44 pm - 11/29/12 )Washington state had six winners in Wednesday night's record Powerball jackpot, but none of them will be retiring on their winnings.
The ticket buyers correctly picked five of the six numbers to win $10,000 each.
The tickets were sold at gas stations and grocery stores in Seattle, Kirkland, Bremerton, Puyallup, Chehalis, and Kettle Falls.
"Washington's Lottery had $10.1 million in Powerball ticket sales alone for last night's drawing," said Arlen Harris with the Washington State Lottery. "A normal week for Powerball sales in Washington is $1 million."
Two lucky winners will split the $587.5 million jackpot. The tickets were bought in Arizona and Missouri.
An additional 8,924,123 players won smaller prizes, including about 60 who each won a million-dollar prize for matching five numbers, CBS News reported. Eight of the $1 million tickets were sold in New Jersey, state lottery officials said. Indiana and Michigan each had two $1 million winners.
Harris said 155,703 of those winning tickets worth a total of more than $868,000 were sold in Washington.
All of the proceeds from the sales of lottery tickets in the state go to fund scholarships and other education programs.
