Bellevue High School football team ranked number one in the nation

Bellevue High School's football team is currently ranked as the number one high school team in the country by ESPN and Sports Illustrated.

The Wolverines completed their season beating Eastside Catholic 35-3 in the 3A state championship.

"On Nov. 30, the Wolverines capped off a terrific season by winning their fifth straight state title and 10th in the last 12 years," says ESPN.

Sports Illustrated reports Bellevue took the top spot in the rankings this week after a loss from the Manatee Hurricanes of Bradenton, FL.

But ESPN says Bellevue's ranking isn't set in stone. Two other teams near the top still have games to complete, and if either take the state title, ESPN says they could take the top spot.

The final ESPN rankings are out on Dec. 24.

    What is the point?
While I suppose congratulations are in order, it seems a little silly to work up some kind of national rankings for high school sports. There will be no national playoffs or bowl games for these kids, and that's as it should be. These are high school kids for gosh sakes, and this kind of attention and focus on rankings just seems wrong. This only encourages the high school programs to focus more on recruiting than academics, and athletes are moving around to become eligible to play for certain schools.

National Rankings for high school football
You are correct "these are high school kids for gosh sakes". That's the point, as only being in high school to have this sort of program that elevates a team to this level, requires many hours of practice, practice and more practice. This keeps these kids focused besides having to have their grades up to par. A wonderful program, that's what keeps them up on top! AND, "they're only kids for gosh sakes"!!! Our hearty CONGRATULATIONS BELLEVUE FOOTBALL and COACHES!
