The mayor of Pacific, who most residents believe nearly drove the small town in south King County to extinction, walked out of yet another city council meeting Monday as the public begged him to hire more police officers.
Mayor Cy Sun is the write-in leader of Pacific. In the year since he took office, he’s fired city managers, the police chief, several police officers and nearly forced the city to dissolve because its insurance carrier refused to deal with him.
He’s the subject of a recall effort. A March special election is a possibility.
Residents went to city hall on Monday to ask the council and Mayor Sun to hire more police officers. There are currently only four working the city of 6,600. Crime has doubled, and so has the overtime those officers have logged.
“Here we are being run down by one man,” a resident told the city council.
“It’s really kind of scary,” another man said. “I have my son. You guys have got your families. Not only is it scary. It’s plum stupid.”
Mayor Sun didn’t want to hear it. When some of his agenda items were pulled from the schedule, he walked out, but several people who were tired of his walking out followed him to his office.
“You won’t listen to what we have to say,” one woman yelled at the mayor.
“Read my blog,” Mayor Sun countered.
“I have,” the woman said. “You’re nuts. Read my blog.”
Another woman shouted, “if you walk away from the public then you’re not our mayor.”
Mayor Sun told KING 5 he’s not going sit by and take these shots. “I’m not going to sit in there and be a dunce,” he said.
What about Sun’s response to the public request for more officers? “They’re not overworked,” he said. “The people are protected.”
The mayor locked his door and went home.
The city council meeting continued.
