The other driver, Michael A. Robertson, 25, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Robertson was also arrested for a DUI hit and run collision on Dec. 15, 2012. According to court documents, a preliminary test showed his blood alcohol level was .197 at the time of that arrest.
The Seattle Times reports Robertson pleaded not guilty to a DUI charge on Jan. 16. A judge ordered him to not drink or take drugs in a court appearance two weeks later, but didn't require Robertson to get an ignition interlock device for his car.
Washington State Patrol Sgt. John Sager said Robertson was driving his 1996 Ford Explorer westbound in the eastbound lanes of SR 520 around 5:30 a.m. on Thursday when he smashed into a car driven by 58-year-old Morgan F. Williams.
Troopers on the scene were unsure how long the SUV was traveling the wrong way before it collided with Williams' 2003 Mazda Protege. Witnesses told troopers the suspect made a U-turn on the highway.
Rescuers had to extricate both drivers from the wreckage. Williams was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she died of her injuries.
The crash blocked all eastbound lanes for the investigation. Crews reopened the roadway for traffic around 8:00 a.m.
Williams' brother told the Times she was on her way to her job at Eddie Bauer in Redmond at the time of the crash. He said Williams grew up in Oak Harbor, got her accounting degree at the University of Washington, and was employed at Eddie Bauer for about 30 years. She has two adult children.
