A distraught Seattle man tried to end it all but police officers literally brought him back from the edge.
On Tuesday, July 8, officers in Seattle responded to multiple 911 calls about a suicidal man on the Pike Street, I-5 overpass.
Officers found the man and started talking with him, but they say that during their conversation he stopped suddenly and jumped over the railing.
“As he’s going over, one of the officers reaches out and grabs the guy mid-air on the other side of the railing, putting himself at an extreme amount of risk of going over that 90-foot overpass,” says Detective Patrick Michaud.
Three officers worked together to get the man back over the railing.
“(The first officers is) able to hold onto him long enough so that the other two officers are able to grab him, and then all of three of them are able to pull this man back over,” describes Michaud.
According to police, officers are not trained to attempt rescues like this one, due to the inherent risk of being injured themselves.
The man was referred to a local hospital for assessment.
