Forecasters say Arctic air moving into the Northwest will push temperatures into the 20s and teens in many areas this week.
Monday will see temperatures reach nearly 40 degrees by midday, according to KING 5 meteorologist Rich Marriott.
However the wind chill will be a factor, especially in the Columbia River Gorge where winds are expected in the 35 mph to 45 mph range with higher gusts.
The coldest temperatures are expected Monday and Tuesday nights. As 2014 wraps up, Marriot says it will be sunny and cold with overnight lows in the teens and 20s, and daytime highs in the mid to upper 30s.
Snow is unlikely as there is no precipitation in the forecast.
It will be even colder east of the Cascades with highs in the 20s and lows to zero.
Marriott forecasts a warm-up later in the week, but if you have plans, like staying outside to watch fireworks at the Space Needle, pack an extra coat.
“If you’re planning on celebrating the new year outdoors, dress very, very warmly,” Marriott says.
Forecasters say precipitation is expected to return as we head towards the first Sunday of 2015.
