After about 40 years, a Bellevue icon is on the brink of closing its doors for good.

Skate King’s final day of operation is June 30, a move general manager Michael Louis doesn’t want to see happen.

“Basically, the value of the land has exceeded what the skating rink can truly generate,” Louis said. “Especially with the condition of the building.”

The plan, according to Louis, is to renovate the building in preparation for a Eastside Harley Davidson motorcycle shop.

With light rail service going in nearby, and the already high property value in Bellevue, Louis said he understands the decision made by the owner, who also owns the building.

However, the business is still popular, Louis said. On Saturdays, for example, Skate King has been bringing in between 800 and 1,000 people.

“So popularity isn’t an issue,” he said.

Skate King will close June 30. At least one special event is planned for May 30.

But Louis isn’t giving up on his favorite rink. He was making calls to find other businesses that could house a skating rink in the nearby area.

“I wouldn’t try to pursue something if there wasn’t demand for it,” Louis said.

Any other building, though, won’t feel the same.

“It’s a sad moment within the area, where you have a community gathering place that has meant so much for so many people … Just to close down,” Louis said. “The building in itself has a particular special quality in it and I know we could find another place, but nothing can really replace the mystique &#8212 the 80s-retro vibe this place has.”
