Fire crews have knocked down a fire at a Mercer Island home, which resulted in live ammunition firing from the intense heat.
A husband and wife awoke to sounds from their garage at the home near Island Crest Park early Tuesday morning. They found the garage filled with smoke and called 9-1-1.
The fire quickly began spreading to the rest of the home.
“When they arrived it was a fully engulfed garage fire,” said Mercer Island Fire Department Battalion Chief Darrel Gordon.
Once firefighters began tackling the blaze, they encountered another challenge.
“He had some ammunition in the garage that started firing; started popping in the garage,” Gordon said.
No one was injured by the fire or stray bullets. The cause of the fire has not been determined, though the incident is under investigation.
