Governor Chris Gregoire does not want to cut funding for school bus service for hundreds of thousands of kids in Washington state.

Gregoire floated the $220 million idea in advance of a special legislative session later this month. She is sending lawmakers a long list of ideas, including many she expects would hurt regular people.

But KOMO TV reports Gregoire told students at a school in Vancouver on Monday that cutting school transportation was now off the table.

Washington would have been the first to completely eliminate state dollars for bus service because of the recent recession. A few other states, including California and Colorado, have cut school transportation dollars in previous years.

The governor did say there would still need to be other cuts to education programs, public safety, and health care to balance the budget.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

    State meds...
I think the Governor needs to get on some meds, hopefully the state has something to get her through the next 12 months. Birkenstock may want to hire her to test out their new designs as she flip-flops more than Kerry.

    A way to make cuts
I was recently traveling in Chile by bus. The bus I was on stopped in a small town and about 10 girls and a man got on the bus ,one of the girls had 1soccer ball and all were dressed in worn looking suit suits, it was the girls soccer team making a road trip to another city to play their high school team by way of cheap public transportation.I have heard that many parents in some school districts refuse to allow their kids to walk a few blocks to a bus stop and insist that the school bus pick their children up from their own driveways. This has made it necessary to buy MORE buses and hire MORE drivers in order to complete the route in a reasonable amount of time

We live in the Edmonds School district and our high schoolers have to walk 2 miles to get to school, the district follows the radius mile, the way a crow flies and expects our children to walk 2 miles w/o sidewalks on busy streets to get to school. The state is so messed up, they took away funding from districts for less than a radius mile.

    Ron Paul
Doesn't change his position often, even when it's not popular. Most politicians will lie to your face if they think it will curry your favor and get your vote. Good ol Uncle Ron has been saying the same thing for 30 years. If you want somebody that won't lie to you and tell you how it is, who won't flip flop depending on how the wind is blowing, even if you don't agree with everything he says (I don't either) vote Ron Paul in 2012!!! At least he is honest, which is more than can be said for Emperor Obama, Bush, Clinton or Bush 1. I don't remember much of Regan, but I'm sure he was a dirty liar too, maybe not as bad Obama but I do remember something about a Contra.
