Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn says new sports arena not just a rumor

Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn says the idea of a new sports arena for the city isn't just a rumor.

"If somebody is going to come forward and spend hundreds of millions of dollars and invest it in our city, we have to take that seriously," McGinn tells KING 5.

The mayor says negotiations are underway with investor Chris Hansen, who is a hedge fund manager in San Francisco. Hansen has ties to Seattle, but McGinn says he won't get any public funding.

"I believe we have to be very careful and prudent with our city dollars," says McGinn.

The proposed arena could house both an NBA and a NHL team.

Why does the idea of a local government, a sports franchise and a hedge fund manager collectively seem all wrong? After the 08' crash, hedge fund people were in the dumpster or in court. Whats the real story behind this guy?

"He won't get any public funding".Glad to see the Mayor let him know from the get go. I agree with anotherfencewalker as to who exactly is Hanson and the other money people involved in this effort? And does anyone else feel that Seattle is doing to Sacramento what Oak City did to Seattle. If we get the team without City OR State money I don't have a problem but if Tax dollars are used to do this HEIST thats a different story

The NBA is dead to me.
I attended hundreds of Sonics games and followed them on the tube when I couldn't be there in person. The Sonics to OKC arse reaming ruined the pro game for me. Still love NCAA hoops and I'd be thrilled to see an NHL team in the area.

Why?Is it because they are run like a business? If the money is better elsewhere why should a business stay in the same place and slowly bleed itself to death? Hey I was sad to see the Sonics go also however the city made the BEST decision in not continuing to knuckle under to the demands of the NBA.Thats life, Sports is the TOY department of that life.I will happily go to the games of a new team as long as they provide a competitive product.

    Public Funding?
I do not understand why a private organization which is what a football, basketball, baseball team is, has to have public funding to pay for a venue. Yes stadiums are expensive. But the private sector should be paying for this not the public. We do not need anymore taxes, levies, or bond issues. If you want a new stadium get private funding for it!

    Dear Mr. Mayor
If you in the city dwellers want to tax yourselves to aid private business, go ahead, but leave us who live in the county alone. That goes for you Bellevue dwellers as well.
