Susan Powell’s friend: Josh Powell threatened loss of his kids would be over his dead body

Feb 10, 2012, 7:32 AM | Updated: 9:44 am

Friends and family of missing woman Susan Powell and her late sons Charles and Braden reportedly had some new information to share in interviews with Dr. Phil McGraw on a show that will air on Friday.

In an appearance on 97.3 KIRO FM Seattle’s Morning News, McGraw said Kiirsi Hellewell, Susan Powell’s best friend in Utah, said Susan had told her of threats Josh had made that now appear to be an eerie foreshadowing of what actually occurred.

“Two years ago, Susan told her best friend Kiirsi who is on the show, that he [Josh Powell] told her then, when they were having trouble, that if he ever lost his children, it would be over his dead body,” said McGraw. “That has come to such a tragic reality.”

McGraw also spoke to Susan Powell’s parents, Chuck and Judy Cox.

Charlie and Braden Powell were sent to live with the Coxes after their grandfather, Steve Powell, was jailed on voyeurism and child porn charges last fall after authorities found explicit images on his computers.

Speaking to reporters after the two boys perished, Chuck Cox said his grandsons were emotionally distant when they first arrived at their home, but recently had begun to open up. That gave Cox hope that someday they would be able say what happened to their mom.

“They were like little robots. If you asked them about mommy, they would run away,” he said. But “in the last week, I could not sit down without them climbing up on my lap.”

“My heart goes out to them,” said McGraw of the Cox family.

“Chuck and Judy Cox at this point, have wrapped their mind around the fact that Susan is gone, they’re never going to find her,” said McGraw. “I asked them also if they felt that any hope of finding her had died with Josh Powell, and they certainly fear that it has.”

The Dr. Phil episode “Inside the Powell Family Tragedy” will air at 3 p.m. Friday on KING 5.
