Seattle sex columnist Dan Savage stars in a new MTV show
starting Tuesday.
In “Savage U,” Stranger Editorial Director Savage will
travel to university campuses talking to students about
sex in college life.
“Savage U is what I do,” said Savage in an interview with MTV. “I’m an advice
columnist, and for years I’ve gone to colleges and done
sort of a live version of my column. My column is called
“Savage Love” and I just
take anonymous questions on cards and answer them.”
The trailer for the new program shows snippets from
Savage’s live presentations, as a well as one-on-one
conversations with students on campus.
“Most of my mail is from college students and high
school students because those are the people that are just
starting to figure it out and make sex work in their lives
and how their relationships are going to work in their
lives,” Savage told 97.3 KIRO FM’s Josh Kerns.
“What they hear is ‘oh sex is dangerous and awful and you
should never do it’ but the messages they see on TV, they
see people doing it all the time in all sorts of different
ways – and hopefully what our show marries is sort of the
idea that it can be fun and you should go for it and you
need to think about it and you need to control for those
risks and you need to use protection.”
Savage says the show should be familiar ground for anyone
who’s followed his “Savage Love” column in The Stranger or
his radio show or podcast over the years.
“The column has really been a celebration of responsible
sexuality and that’s what the tv show is a celebration of
too.”
Savage U premiers Tuesday at 11 p.m. on MTV.
