Weekend traffic guide: Aurora, Spokane, Mercer Streets closed

Give yourself plenty of extra time if you're planning to drive around Seattle this weekend.

Road crews will be taking advantage of the nice weather to work on major projects on Aurora, Mercer St., and Spokane St. viaduct.

"All three of these projects are major projects on tight schedules," explains Marybeth Turner with the Seattle Department of Transportation. "[There are] not that many fair weather weekends when we don't have major events happening or other major projects."

Traffic will compounded around Century Link Field on Saturday night for a Sounders FC match against the Colorado Rapids, as well. On Sunday, the Storm will take on the Phoenix Mercury at Key Arena, congesting traffic around the Seattle Center.

Aurora Ave N details:

Aurora Ave N will be closed at N 85th St from 10 p.m. Friday, July 6 through 6 a.m. Monday, July 9. One westbound lane on N 85th St through the intersection will remain open. More details.

Mercer Street details:

Mercer Street will be closed Friday at 11:00 p.m. and reopen Monday at 5:00 a.m. Crews will do some electrical work to accommodate future lighting and signals, and pave in preparation for new, wider on- and off-ramps at Mercer St. More details.

Spokane Street viaduct details:

The westbound lanes of the Spokane Street viaduct will be closed between I-5 and SR 99 from 10 p.m. on Friday, July 6, until 5 a.m. on Monday, July 9. The SR 99 off-ramp to West Seattle will remain open, providing an opportunity to avoid the closure. More details.

The problem with King County drivers is,
    1. They don't know how to merge into freeway-speed traffic. 2. They think that just because they drive a BMW, Lexus or Audi they are entitled to the left lane. 3. The bigger the truck, the more traffic laws don't apply to you.

The wealthy do believe their time is more important than yours... and I agree, most people drive down the on ramps, they don't accelerate, no left signal, many don't even look... it is truly amazing how ignorant they are. In most socialist countries, to get a driver's license is an involved and expensive process....In the US, the wealthy want it to be easy and cheap so they don't have to pay workers as much. You have to have workers be able to get to work so they can produce profit for you.

    RE: question 1.
When they stopped posting yield signs on on ramps, cars entering the freeway just drive on without even looking. - OR go like a bat out of Hades to get in front of you - THEN slow down.

The other new habit is: since when is stopping on side streets no longer required before getting in front of arterial traffic ?

    No, the problem is....
they drive too fast and make too many lane changes and that has a domino effect slowing down traffic. Urban driving is different than driving in rural areas. You are part of a massive crowd. If Seattle would join under advanced countries they would reduce the freeway speed limit to 45, encourage folks to pick a lane and STAY IN IT until exit. AND drop the emissions testing replace it with mandatory inspections to make sure your car will not break down during rush hour. But hey, sitting in traffic is fine with wireless internet, good sound system, and that all important phone. Make good use of all those gas tax dollars we are sending over the divide!!
