Seattle police are on the hunt for a burglar who stole at least a dozen firearms from a Beacon Hill home, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition.

The home in the 4000 block of 14th Avenue South was burglarized Wednesday. Police have released photos of a suspect taken from a nearby surveillance camera. Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call SPD’s burglary unit at 206-386-1855.
When the resident returned home that day, he found his door pried open and empty boxes near his front porch. Those boxes previously contained about 2,000 rounds of ammo. The man also discovered that many firearms had been taken from his home.

The guns and accessories were stored in a range bag — a bag designed for firearms, clips, etc. The suspect can be seen with the bag in one surveillance photo.
Seattle safe storage for firearms
Earlier this year, a University of Washington study revealed that most of the state’s gun owners do not properly store their weapons. It’s part of the justification for Seattle passing a safe storage law that requires gun owners to lock up their weapons and report any stolen firearms. It also holds owners accountable if their stolen firearm is used in a crime and fines them up to $10,000.
Seattle recently defined what “safe storage” means: basically a gun safe. Other cities in Washington have moved toward similar safe storage regulations.
But the Second Amendment Foundation has sued over the law, arguing that it conflicts with state gun control laws. Edmonds faces a similar lawsuit. Legal arguments around safe storage have been brewing in Washington, raising questions as to how such a regulation could ever be enforced.
