Seattle City Councilwoman Kshama Sawant is a permanent stain on the city, and her latest, vile attack is over the line. Shame on any of us who sit idly by as she embarrasses this city and the neighborhood she represents.

Making sport of attacking the memories of people before their bodies are even cold, Sawant went after Paul Allen less than 24 hours after his death. It’s not hard to figure out why she classlessly attacks the dead.

To start, she’s an ideological robot who sticks to talking points, which is why, in part, the timing of her viciousness doesn’t phase her. She has no empathy for those she is jealous of.

Sawant craves attention. She’s a provocateur — much like Milo Yiannopoulos — though without a shred of charm. And when you’re as craven as Sawant, you need the attention. What better way to get it than to attack a well-loved man after he has died?

But above all else, Sawant is a bad person. She is a legitimately bad human being who represents the worst of humanity.

I certainly didn’t agree with some of Allen’s politics, but how bad of a person must one be to go on the attack so quickly? It offers no value. Her commentary divides. But that’s how she stays in power. She helps create class wars where people are duped by her “I’m fighting for you!” schtick, while she takes advantage of them. And because she preys on people who feel like they have no power, they overlook her deep, disturbing character flaws.

As will happen to us all, Sawant will pass.

She will have a life of some defining victories and some stinging defeats. And on her death, there will be folks like me who will remember her as a soulless agent of hate and despair. But I won’t write anything nasty about her in the first short hours. I’ll do what she should have done after the passing of Allen, or Barbara Bush, or John McCain: I’ll keep my mouth shut.
