border wall, trump...

The big speech is over. We heard Democrats Pelosi and Schumer tell us that they, too, want to secure the border, just like President Trump. But they reject the tactic of shutting down government to do it. So they’re dug in.

President Trump, in his speech, described what sounded to me like an invasion of criminals bent on killing us, or getting us all hooked on drugs – a threat so extreme that he sees the border wall as not merely a barrier against evil, but in fact a symbol of love for the people protected by it. And his bottom line was simple: it’s up to Congress now.

“To every citizen, call Congress and tell them to finally, after all of these decades, to secure our border,” Trump said.

And that tells me what needs to happen next. Hold a vote!

Let’s give the citizens three days to make their calls to Congress, then hold a vote in the House and the Senate on the wall. And abide by the result.

I will say both speeches were way too dull for prime time. There was nothing new. And Trump stayed on script. I thought at the very least he was going reach under the desk and  pull out a briefcase with 108,340,000,000 Mexican pesos. Which is the equivalent of $5.6 billion dollars. Then he could have looked at the camera, and said “Told ya so!”

And then, cut to the shot of Pelosi and Schumer.

Now that would be good TV. Maybe next time.

Ross: Are we killing car culture? Or is car culture killing the US?

I don’t think the question is whether we're going to "kill" our car culture. The real question is can we stop our car culture from killing the U.S.?

The rent control bill died in the Washington State Legislature this week, even though Democrats control both houses.
