The Friday morning commute almost went well over the final day of Viadoom, until a sudden power outage snarled traffic in a commonly underused route into Seattle.

The power outage turned off traffic lights throughout Rainier Valley. MLK Jr. Way runs through this area and is a route that KIRO Radio Traffic Reporter Chris Sullivan commonly advises drivers to take to avoid the crawl on northbound I-5 into the city. But on Friday, Sullivan told drivers to stay away.

The darkened traffic lights were slowing things down. Sullivan said that taking surface streets west of I-5, such as Airport Way, were a much better options despite being slow.

It’s been about three weeks since the closure of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, and Seattle-area commuters have gone without an alternative route. The tunnel to replace the viaduct is scheduled to open on Monday.

The following are updates on the final Viadoom commute, including reports from KIRO Radio Traffic Reporters Tracy Taylor and Chris Sullivan.

Northbound I-5 is a crush from the middle of Boeing Field into downtown Seattle. It’s a 42 minute drive from Southcenter into downtown.

The West Seattle Bridge feeding into I-5 is backed up to 35th Avenue. There are related backups on Admiral Way, too.

It’s an hour to drive southbound I-5 from Everett to Seattle.

A power outage in Rainier Valley is having significant impacts on the roads in that area. Traffic signals are out. If you’re going to ditch I-5 near Boeing Field, Sullivan recommends using surface streets west of I-5, and avoiding MLK to the east of I-5.

It’s about an hour to drive on I-5 from Everett to Seattle.

The West Seattle Bridge over to I-5 and into Seattle is a crawl and backed up to Delridge.

It’s 42 minutes to drive north from Southcenter into downtown Seattle.

Northbound I-405 is slow. It’s 45 minutes from Renton to Bellevue.

7:20 a.m.

7 a.m.

A freight train is blocking surface streets in SoDo near 1st Avenue.

6:45 a.m.

“The rain is contributing to heavy slowing at this point, especially on the I-5 northbound corridor with all the early commuters,” Sullivan said. “We are looking at a 6.5 mile backup now starting at the south end of Boeing Field, all the way into downtown. It’s 35 minutes from Southcenter into downtown.”

“The West Seattle Bridge is also backed up from before Delridge,” he said. “Now is a pretty good time to avoid some of this if you can. Eject from I-5 at Boeing Access Road. Airport Road is still a pretty decent option; it’ snot completely slowed down at Lucile yet, but the window for that is closing. MLK is great all the way in. SoDo surface streets are also doing OK.”

The southbound commute is about 50 minutes from Everett to Bellevue or Seattle.
