After the previous SeaTac mayor resigned for allegations that he defrauded a law client, the council appointed Erin Sitterley as the new mayor. Soon into the her term, however, The Stranger and King County Democrats strongly criticized Sitterley merely for being a Trump supporter.

One of the arguments made by The Stranger was that a white Trump supporter should not lead a minority-majority city like SeaTac. It hasn’t exactly convinced Sitterley.

“We are a minority-majority, but I was elected to represent our entire city, and I think we’ve been doing a good job at that,” Mayor Sitterley told KTTH’s Jason Rantz. “Who I voted for for president really doesn’t matter when you take a look at how well the City of SeaTac is doing.”

The King County Democrats released a statement implying that Sitterley could not support the civil rights of the diverse SeaTac community simply by being a Trump supporter. She says it’s the first time in her career that she’s ever been accused of this.

“I’m a big picture person, and so when I look at taking care of city of approximately 29,000,” Sitterley said. “I’m looking at having a city that is fiscally responsible, I’m looking at a city that will be able to survive an economic downturn when they occur, I’m looking at a city that has an emphasis on public safety, public justice, and to keep our city upright no matter what comes at us.”

“We’re up $25 million, we have a rainy day fund that will allow the city to remain upright when those economic downturns occur, and that impacts every single person in the city.”

Despite the outcry, Sitterley remains unfazed.

“I was elected to serve and represent the people of SeaTac, and I think our record over the last three years as council proves that our eyes are on SeaTac, we are paying attention to our city, we are listening to our constituents. We are making SeaTac and really, really great place to live.
