Boring the Seattle Tunnel

The City of Seattle says farewell to Bertha as she starts her journey burrowing for over a year under Seattle's streets.

On Nov. 23, 2013, crews began using barges to remove soil from the SR 99 tunnel dig site in Seattle. The barges are hauling the soil unearthed by Bertha, the SR 99 tunneling machine, across Puget Sound to a large reclamation site near Port Ludlow.
