A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on the Alaskan Way Viaduct for the second time in less than 24 hours, snarling traffic Thursday afternoon.

Police say the 52-year-old motorcyclist was riding northbound on a 500 cc Aprilia motor scooter at around 2:50 p.m. when he hit a guardrail near Seneca Street and was thrown from the motor scooter. He died at the scene.

The accident closed the northbound lanes of State Route 99 until about 7:00 p.m, backing up traffic in the area for hours.

The crash comes less than a day after a motorcyclist was killed Wednesday night in a crash near First Avenue South, police said.

The cause is unknown. The rider flew over the side of the viaduct and landed on Railroad Avenue below.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.
