A light snow fell overnight in the Western Washington lowlands, leaving many roads slick for the Friday morning commute in the Seattle area.

“We’ve had several weather spotter reports today and most of them have been anywhere from an inch up to three inches,” National Weather Service Meteorologist Ted Buehner told KIRO Radio. “The higher amounts have been further north as anticipated. Ferndale: 3 inches, Sequim 2 to 3 inches. Locations in Snohomish and Skagit counties are in that range.”

Buehner said as you move south past Seattle into Olympia, most totals are in the one to two inch range.

Police and the Washington State Patrol reported numerous accidents.

Many schools delayed opening with buses on snow routes. Seattle schools were on a two-hour delay. A few other districts, such as Federal Way and Bellevue, decided to declare a snow day.

The state Transportation Department and local governments had trucks out overnight spreading sand or deicer as the first widespread snow of the season moved through Western Washington.

The National Weather Service says warmer temperatures will turn precipitation to rain throughout the day.

Heavier snow is forecast in the mountains and parts of Eastern Washington where temperatures are freezing.

“We got off easy,” said Buehner. “Consider this a dress rehearsal for early 2014.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
