A group of students helping make an anti-bullying video at Safeco Field on Thursday were surprised by Mariners ace pitcher Felix Hernandez and Seattle rapper Macklemore.

The students from Highland Middle School in Bellevue thought they were making the public service announcement with the Mariner Moose.

But after the Moose “flubbed” his lines a couple of times, Hernandez took over.

“I want kids to be safe, I want them to be themselves and just to be good,” said Felix, who has kids of his own. He added that you don’t have to be a dad to know how tough it is for bullied students.

He recognizes that he has a responsibility as a role model to send a positive message. Another big local figure wanting to send a good message to kids was Seattle rapper Macklemore who joined Felix to help the kids out.

“When Felix Hernandez came out and Macklemore came out I was speechless,” said 13-year-old Dylan.

“I thought we’d just be shooting a commercial for anti-bullying. I never expected to see Macklemore and Felix Hernandez here,” said student Payton. “I have lived. This is one of the best days of my life.”

The anti-bullying message is simple. Just because you look different or dress different, doesn’t mean you should be bullied. It’s asking kids to support each other and sign an anti-bullying pledge. The commercial will be available for radio and television use.

King Felix hopes kids get the message.

“I think it’s really important for us and everybody in the community,” he says.
