KIRO Radio 97.3 FM recognized for outstanding community service

KIRO Radio 97.3 FM was awarded the National Association of Broadcasters’ Crystal Radio Award, recognizing their outstanding year-round commitment to community service. The award was announced during the NAB Convention in Las Vegas on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.

This is the fourth time KIRO has been named a Crystal Radio Award recipient, and the first since switching to an FM frequency in 2009. KIRO-AM previously won the award in 1992, 1996 and 1998.

“KIRO’s mission is to cover the news, connect our community, and make a positive difference in people’s lives. That’s been the goal for the past 80 years,” said Carl Gardner, Bonneville Seattle Vice President/Market Manager. “People who work at KIRO love living in the Northwest, and we feel privileged to give something back through our work.”

“Every day we strive to strengthen our community through the power and influence of KIRO Radio, while connecting and supporting our audience,” said Pete Gammell, KIRO Radio Program Director. “Our goal is to build upon that legacy every year.”

Bonneville Seattle was recognized for this prestigious award, in part, because of the following campaigns:

  • Raised a record $500,000 for local foster kids and families for Treehouse, as part of the KIRO Radio Holiday Magic in December 2012.
  • Year-long campaign to tell the stories of wounded veterans to Help Build a New Northwest Fisher House at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, the largest military base on the West Coast.
  • Partnered with the Pierce County Crimestoppers to secure and protect an appropriate family burial plot for the slain Powell children.
  • Devoted more than 13,000 minutes of air time to public service announcements for local community organizations needing publicity.
