3 plead not guilty in Phoenix holdup shooting caseJanuary 15, 2014 @ 3:11 pm
PHOENIX (AP) - A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with a robbery at a Phoenix strip club that led to the shooting of a police officer and a civilian on New Year's Eve, authorities said Wednesday.
Phoenix police said William Herbert Mayes was taken into custody Tuesday night in New York City on a warrant charging him with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
It wasn't immediately clear when Mayes, 30, will be extradited to Arizona.
The three other suspects allegedly involved with the armed robbery of $18,000 and the shooting pleaded not guilty at an arraignment hearing Wednesday. Their initial pretrial conferences are scheduled for Feb. 27.
Roger Allen Sharp, 26, was charged with two counts of attempted murder, aggravated assault, armed robbery, unlawful flight and resisting arrest.
David Lee Murray Jr., 36, was charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery and two counts of armed robbery and aggravated assault.
Jason Beau Keep, 35, was charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
A not-guilty plea was entered for Keep after he waived appearing in court.
Police have said Keep believed his former employer had up to $500,000 in the safe. The plot to take the money fell apart when the suspects spotted a large crowd outside the club, police said.
The thieves instead followed two employees and robbed them of $18,000 outside a nearby restaurant before their confrontation with the officer and the volunteer sheriff's posse member.
Police said Wednesday that Officer Scott Sefranka, 34, was released from a hospital and that Maricopa County Sheriff's volunteer posse member Phillip Grigg, 63, remained hospitalized in critical condition.
