Newtown marks 6 months since school massacre

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) - The town where 20 children and six educators were massacred in December went silent for a moment Friday, six months later, at a remembrance event that doubled as a call to action on weapons control, with the reading of names of thousands of victims of gun violence.

The mood of the six-month marker was decidedly more political than private, with a group called Mayors Against Illegal Guns holding events in 10 states calling for lawmakers to expand background checks and urging senators who opposed the bill to reconsider.

Two sisters of slain teacher Victoria Soto addressed a crowd gathered at Edmond Town Hall in Newtown for a 26-second moment of silence, honoring the 20 children and six adults gunned down at the school on Dec. 14.

"This pain is excruciating and unbearable, but thanks to people like you, that come out and support us, we are able to get through this," said Carlee Soto, who hugged and held hands with her sister Jillian before taking the stage.

The event then transitioned to the reading of the names of more than 5,000 Americans killed with guns since the tragedy in Newtown. The reading of names was expected to take 12 hours.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns, which organized the event in Newtown, also launched a bus tour that will travel to 25 states over 100 days to build support for legislation to expand background checks for gun buyers. Such legislation failed in the Senate in April, and there are no indications it has gained traction over concerns about protecting gun rights.

The gunman in Newtown killed his mother and the 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary School with a semiautomatic rifle, then committed suicide as police arrived. The shooting led some relatives of victims to campaign for tougher gun laws, including some who were in Washington this week lobbying lawmakers for action.

Jillian and Carlee Soto met with President Barack Obama as they campaigned for gun control.

"He just told us to have faith," said Jillian Soto, 24. "It isn't something that happens overnight. It's something that you have to continue to fight for. Within good time we will have this passed and we will have change."

Carlee Soto, who is 20, said they got back from Washington at 2 a.m. She said that the president and vice president spoke of waging a long battle and that she plans to continue her efforts, as well.

"It's a very tough battle to fight," she said. "It's very frustrating, but knowing I'm doing this for my sister and the other 25 and everyone else that's been affected by gun violence, it's worth it."

Teresa Rousseau, whose daughter Lauren was among the six educators killed at Sandy Hook, also met with the president this week. She said at first she wondered how she would survive, and now she knows she can and feels empowered as she campaigns for tougher gun laws.

"I think it's time the average American gets a little louder in what he has to say," Rousseau said.

Laura Miller was among many in the crowd wearing the school's green and white colors. She said that her son, a kindergartner, was unharmed but that his teacher was shot in the foot.

"I'm here for the people who were less fortunate than me," she said. "I think they're the bravest people in the world to be able to come out here and fight for change, and that's what we need to do. If more people come out, that's the only way anything is ever going to change."

The mayors group also held events in 10 states calling for lawmakers to expand background checks and urging senators who opposed the bill to reconsider. Those events, which include gun violence survivors and gun owners, were being in Arkansas, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Montana, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Suzanne Conway, 37, was among a handful of people who attended a rally in a Charlotte, N.C., park. The mother of four young children said the shooting compelled her to start a chapter of an anti-gun group, Moms Demand Action.

"Newtown hit me hard. I had to do something about it," she said. "People are not going to stop fighting. This is a very important issue."

In Indiana, about two dozen protesters gathered on the Monon Trail in Indianapolis and talked about pressing Indiana's congressional delegation to support background check legislation. Sen. Joe Donnelly, a Democrat, supports the checks, but Sen. Dan Coats, a Republican, does not.

The protest, held in a liberal swath of Republican Rep. Susan Brooks' district, should be about laying continued pressure on lawmakers, said Peter Luster, Indiana state director of Mayors Against Illegal Guns. Lawmakers have daily calls with their staff to check in on what constituents are talking about, and they should hear about background checks constantly, he said.

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who co-founded the mayors group, this week sent a letter asking donors not to support Democratic senators who opposed the bill to expand background checks.

On the other side of the debate, the National Rifle Association is focusing on Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who co-sponsored the bill to expand background checks, with a TV ad urging viewers to phone Manchin's office and tell him "to honor his commitment to the 2nd Amendment." The NRA plans to spend $100,000 airing the ad in West Virginia markets over the next two weeks.

    school shooting
When I heard the news of this yesterday I was just shocked and wanted to blame everything on guns and found myself mad at our government and the school system and of corse the shooter, but after a some what sleepless night I woke and thought how can I possibly tell my 4 year old daughter she can't go to school next year because it's not safe? Well you Know what I'm not going to because this problem isn't just the fault of the school system, government,or shooter. The blame lands flat square on you and me!!! Yes it's our fault We are the ones that let our kids down that put their lives in danger, we are the ones that voted for people to make the best plan to keep our kids safe and to give them an education, and after yesterday I don't think it's working very well. So as a parent I am going to do something to assure my daughters safety and to give her the education she deserves . In my mind there is no budget when it comes to the safety of our kids, I could go on all day about this but for now I ask for everyone to please post ideas and comments and hug your child and think hard about how to keep our kids safe, today I'm sad and sorry.

@Daddy....OK, my suggestion would be for everyone to secure their firearm. Either a trigger lock or gun safe would be the responsible thing to do for those who don't already.
I'm not saying this will end all gun crime. But it may have prevented the two most recent rampages. If the mother had secured her guns properly, maybe the son doesn't have access and we aren't planning funerals the week before Christmas. Each of us who owns a firearm is accountable to the citizens of the communities in which we live. So take the worst case scenario into account. Just because a weapon is locked inside a house doesn't mean it's secure. With Rights comes greater responsibility.

This is a very good comment and a good idea, as I for one have done today, also I would like to thank everyone that has posted today and their ideas. I went to talk to my 92 year old uncle who served in WW11 and told him what I posted today he agreed with me and I felt better he also said some things that made me think about the state our country is in and what should be done and to tell you the truth he may be right but it scares me to think that it would be good for my family I don't know so I'll let you tell me what you think. Uncle Rolly thinks if we put up a 25 foot fence around the structure and have guards 4 and aft to check any one coming and going also a gaud with a dog walking the fenced in area and cameras at doors in and out and he went on and on and I left thinking he might be rite. Anyway Im glad someone here read my post, thank you. Jim

How do you enforce a law about trigger locks etc?
That is the whole issue here, laws do not prevent people from doing things, neither do the police.

@RonJ.....I was talking about personal RESPONSIBILITY, not a law.
Every gun owner has the responsibility to properly secure their weapon. It goes with gun ownership. If you need a law to tell you that, fine. If someone chooses to not secure that firearm, maybe they shouldn't own one. You may have the right to carry a gun. I just hope you have eyes in the back of your head, lest someone take it from you.

Liberals are racists, of course they aren't going to complain about blacks being murdered in record numbers in places like Chicago.

Just a day or two ago CNN had a photo of Syrian refugees...and the photo was of a blonde Syrian child. You know CNN had to look long and hard to find a blond Syrian to use as the face of refugees. Clearly they felt more common complexions wouldn't convey their propaganda as well.

Had you read my post, you would have found this line:

"Both sides, pro-gun and anti-gun, should at least let the bodies cool before trying to make political fodder out of 20 dead kids."

But since you bring it up, let's look at the difference between the people who are cluelessly and without class using this event to call for a gun ban and those who are cluelessly and without class using this event to defend gun ownership, (or even recommend a more widespread availability of hand guns).

The first classless and clueless group saying "Yepper's, this here just proves we should be bannin' them thar firearms" is making a (very bad) proposal to hopefully prevent similar situations in the future.

The second classless and clueless group saying "See, this here just proves that we need to have more guns available to the law abidin' citizens so some teacher or janitor in that school could have killed the gunman before so many kids died" is more immediately concerned with an imaginary threat to their personal arsenals than with the murder of all those kids in Newtown.

Godds sake, people. This is not the time to turn this into a political debate. If your right to own a firearm is more important to you than the unspeakable loss at that school, have the good grace and decency to keep your yap shut, for now. If your desire to prevent other people from owning firearms is more important to you than the unspeakable loss at that school, also have the good grace and decency to keep your yap shut, for now.

Your post prompted a thought. Why not teach about firearms and their use in schools. The libs think teaching young kids about the detail of homosexual sex and how to apply a condom is useful how about teaching about firearm safety and a respect for the harm guns can do. Schools used to have gun clubs and shooting teams and there wasn't as many shootings...they have arisen since the libs have tried to turn firearms into a bugaboo.
