Greek anti-terrorist police raid nets weaponsFebruary 10, 2014 @ 9:43 am
ATHENS, Greece (AP) - Greek anti-terrorist police raided apartments in the Athens area on Monday, seizing weapons and explosives believed to be linked to a Turkish group allegedly responsible for assassinations and bombings in Turkey.
Police said four foreigners _ whose nationality was not made public _ had been detained.
Weapons seized included an automatic rifle, three handguns, a silencer, two machine guns, bullets, more than six kilograms (13 pounds) of explosives and two hand grenades.
Maps of Athens, the northeastern Greek city of Alexandroupolis, and of Turkey also were found, as were berets bearing the emblem of the Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front, or DHKP-C.
Originally founded in the late 1970s as Dev Sol, DHKP-C is a Marxist-Leninist group that has been deemed a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union.
More recently, the DHKP-C claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on the U.S. Embassy in the Turkish capital last year, which killed the bomber and a security guard and seriously wounded a television journalist. The group also attacked the headquarters of Turkey's ruling party and the Justice Ministry.
Monday's raid came two days after police arrested a 44-year-old Turkish woman on the southern Greek island of Crete. Authorities said they were acting on an international arrest warrant for the woman, whose name was not released, on charges of participation in a terrorist organization and in terrorist activity in Turkey.
