Quake shakes part of Chile's Pacific shoreline

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — An earthquake has struck off Chile's Pacific coast, and Chilean authorities have called for a precautionary evacuation along a stretch of shoreline in case of a tsunami. There are no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

Chile's geophysical agency puts the quake's preliminary magnitude at 6.4, while the U.S. Geological Survey reports it at magnitude 5.1.

Chilean officials say a precautionary evacuation has been ordered on the coast around the area where the Arica and Parinacota region adjoins the Tarapaca region.

The USGS says the quake hit around 4:16 p.m. Sunday and its epicenter was about 36 kilometers (22 miles) north-northwest of Iquique, Chile.
