Candidate says "rape thing" not cause for abortion

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A Washington state congressional candidate says abortion should not be legal, even when it involves "the rape thing."
A liberal advocacy group provided audio to The Associated Press on Wednesday in which Republican hopeful John Koster was explaining his views on abortion at a Sunday fundraiser. Koster says he does not oppose abortion when the life of the mother is in danger but then explains he would oppose it when it involves rape or incest.
Koster twice uses the phrase "the rape thing" when describing his views on abortion, saying it doesn't make the situation better by "putting more violence into a woman's body."
Koster's campaign manager Larry Stickney says Koster has been a huge proponent of dealing strongly with sex offenders. He says the implication that Koster is cavalier about the issue is preposterous.
Koster is locked in one of the nation's most competitive congressional races against Democrat Suzan DelBene.
