PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) - The Washington Department of Ecology says a heavy fuel oil spill in the Port Angeles harbor wasn't as big as originally thought.
Ecology spokesman Curt Hart says about 50 to 100 gallons spilled into the water early Wednesday after a Harley Marine Services barge was overfilled during fueling at the Tesoro Port Angeles terminal. The first estimate was 840 gallons but Hart says most of the fuel stayed on the barge deck.
He says the other good news is that the spill was contained by booms set up around the barge before fueling began.
No injured wildlife has been found although Ecology says all oil spills cause some environmental damage.
Crews are working to get the fuel out of the water. Hart says Harley Marine is paying for oil recovery efforts.
