North Cascades Highway to reopen Tuesday

WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) - The Transportation Department says road crews plan to reopen the North Cascades Highway Tuesday afternoon.

Spokesman Jeff Adamson in Wenatchee says crews are working Monday to remove about 2 feet of snow that fell over the weekend. He says final avalanche control work is Tuesday morning and the highway will reopen, weather permitting.

The 37-mile stretch of Highway 20 closed Nov. 20 for the winter. Road crews started clearing snow and avalanches in mid-March.

Transportation Department crews are still working to reopen two other passes closed each winter, Cayuse and Chinook passes on Highway 410 on the east side of Mount Rainier National Park. The goal is to reopen those passes by Memorial Day weekend.
