7 arrested at Olympia homeless camp

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - Police arrested seven people Tuesday evening in downtown Olympia after they refused to take down a homeless camp.

The Olympian reports ( http://bit.ly/YXneVu) the camp was set up Monday on state-owned property by the Olympia Movement for Justice and Peace to protest the lack of shelter.

At the same time as the arrests, the Olympia City Council and the Thurston County Board of Commissioners held a joint meeting on homeless services. They made no decisions.

does this happen all the time in Olympia?
i've heard of more than a couple attempts at ordinances that were aimed at cleaning up downtown. WHY then, would the city council shoot those down?

homeless/runaway kids camping outside of your city hall EVERY NIGHT? it starts to reflect on the city.

wasn't there a study done where a building with one broken window was left in the middle of an area and within a short time ALL the windows were broken out? in other words the behavior that's allowed spreads?

so the message in Olympia is, "we have no pride. let the people do whatever they want and leave their garbage anywhere they want."

    my hometown is slipping...

    People are camping in Olympia
Because there's a huge homeless problem in the area. Passing a law isn't going to cure the problems. Why doesn't the City fund a homeless shelter? Why not open up the Community Center to the homeless? How about that new City office building? Now that would make a great homeless shelter! Or the old City office building? The downtown core area is a "blight"; the panhandling, drugs/alcohol and lack of leadership has led to these problems. What a bunch of short-sighted thinking! They should make Olympia a "gun-free" zone too so that there's no more shootings in Olympia! And while they're at it -- outlaw poverty too...

A perfect end to Christine Gregoire's tenure
She drove the state into the ground through irresponsible spending in the name of the very people whom she apparently can't bear to look at on the way to work.
