Pickup off I-84 into Columbia; boy dies, father OK

HOOD RIVER, Ore. (AP) - Oregon State Police say divers have recovered a boy's body from a pickup that slid on icy Interstate 84 in the Columbia River Gorge, crashed through a guardrail and plunged into the Columbia River.

Lt. Gregg Hastings says the 40-year-old man driving the pickup was able to escape and swim to shore Monday afternoon but wasn't able to save his son. The father was taken to a hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Skamania County, Wash., sheriff's divers found the pickup and the boy's body about 9:30 p.m. Monday in about 40 feet of water.

Hastings said the names of the father and son would be released Tuesday.

The right hand westbound lane of the freeway was blocked for several hours east of Hood River.
