State orders removal of derelict Tacoma ship

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The state Ecology Department has issued an emergency enforcement order requiring people responsible for a derelict ship that sank in Tacoma's Hylebos Waterway to come up with a plan within seven days to raise it.

The News Tribune reports ( http://bit.ly/16ji9cx) the order announced Monday names three people or businesses connected with the 167-foot Helena Star. If they don't come up with a plan, the state could contract the work and charge them for it.

The ship sank Jan. 25 and is tangled with another derelict. The Helena Star also made news in 1978 when the Coast Guard intercepted it off the Washington coast with 37 tons of marijuana on board.
