TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A Pierce County Superior Court judge has sentenced a Gig Harbor woman to 13 years, nine months in prison for hiring a hit man to kill her husband.
Karen Lofgren had pleaded guilty last month to solicitation to commit second-degree murder. Prosecutors say the 48-year-old former nurse used an acquaintance as a go-between to hire someone she thought was a Mexican gangster to kill her husband. The acquaintance went to police, and the hit man turned out to be an undercover Pierce County sheriff's detective.
The News Tribune reports ( http://is.gd/xHj7rw) prosecutors asked for a high-end sentence, rejecting her contentions that stress from a bad marriage and a hostile divorce pushed her to commit the crime.
Others asked for leniency based on her service in the military and her work at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. But the gave Lofgren the high end sentence, saying at Friday's sentencing, "she chose to do it."
