WA police say homeless man sent dog to get help

TUMWATER, Wash. (AP) - It's the kind of thing Lassie did.

A Tumwater, Wash., police detective says an ailing homeless man attached a note seeking help to his dog's harness and sent the animal out in hopes someone would read the message.

Detective Jen Kolb tells Seattle's KIRO-TV ( http://is.gd/EhVhBQ) that a woman walking her dog along railroad tracks on Wednesday spotted another dog with a note attached.

Kolb says the note read: "Send Help. No Joke. Cannot walk." It also said, "Medicine not working. Need doctor."

The woman who found the note called 911 but the note was unsigned and police had no idea where to look.

Finally they learned that a homeless man with a dog hung out in the area and eventually found his camp in nearby woods.

Kolb says the man was immobile, had no phone and was afraid he was going to die. So he sent his four-legged pal named Buddy to get help.

KIRO reports the man was treated at an Olympia hospital and released. No details of the man's ailment were available for privacy reasons.
