Tacoma celebrates bridge's 100th anniversary

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Tacoma celebrated the 100th anniversary Friday of the historic Murray Morgan bridge, which crosses the Thea Foss Waterway to connect downtown with the port area.

The bridge reopened Feb. 1 after a closure of nearly six years for repairs. The $53 million project renovated the deck and mechanical and electrical systems to operate the lift span. Two lanes were converted to bicycle and pedestrian pathways. About 5,000 vehicles a day use the bridge.

Officials at Friday's rededication included Washington Gov. Jay Inslee and Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez.

Originally opened in 1913, the bridge was renamed for Tacoma author, historian and one-time bridge tender Murray Morgan.
