More WA students take and pass AP exams in 2012

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - State education officials say more Washington high school students are taking and passing Advanced Placement exams for college credit.

In 2012, More than 20,000 students _ about a third of the class of 2012 _ took at least one AP exam last spring. That's an increase of 6.6 percent from 2011.

Scores also increased last year, with about 20 percent of Washington's seniors scoring a three or greater. Students with at least a three on an AP exam can earn college credit at many but not all colleges.

Washington was 15th in the nation last year for the number of students who scored a three or higher on at least one exam.

AP exams, which are offered in 34 subjects, are given each May and are scored on a scale from one to five.
