Convict in 2 Portland 1993 murders being released

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - A man convicted of murder in the 1993 slayings of two women in Portland is being released from prison Friday.

Scott William Cox of Newberg was sentenced to 25 years, and with time off for good behavior and credit for time spent in jail, his term is up.

The Oregonian reports ( http://is.gd/Yq2M6o) the 49-year-old is being moved to the Yamhill County Jail and will live in subsidized housing while he looks for work. The community corrections director, Ted Smietana, says he'll have to check in daily with a probation officer.

If Cox had been convicted in 1995, after Oregon voters approved Measure 11, he would have been sentenced to at least 50 years in prison.

Police in other states, including Mountlake Terrace, Wash., continue to investigate Cox in other killings.
