TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - The Tacoma Art Museum and relatives of a couple who donated Chinese artifacts in the 1970s have reached an agreement to settle a dispute over disposition of the robe and jade collection.
The Seattle Times reports ( http://is.gd/Y9Qpji) that the agreement was announced Tuesday.
The museum will donate a few works from the collection to an appropriate local institution, and continue to auction off the rest of the items donated by the Young family.
The museum plans to auction the rest of the collection next week, and will use some of the money to purchase works by Chinese American artists, while giving the Young family credit for the donation.
Family member Al Young said earlier the family had believed the museum would keep the items in its permanent collection. In a statement Tuesday, he expressed regret "that the conversation between us, the museum and the community took the direction that it did."
Museum Director Stephanie Stebich said she was pleased "that this all has been resolved."
