BELLINGHAM, Wash. (AP) - Police in Bellingham, Wash., say a woman who initially told them she was shot by a masked man when she opened her apartment door now admits she accidentally shot herself.
Police spokesman Mark Young said Friday he did not know the 25-year-old woman's motive for making up the story. The woman was not identified. She was treated at a local hospital and released.
The Bellingham Herald says ( http://is.gd/O5zrND) a small-caliber handgun found at the apartment on Thursday belonged to the woman's boyfriend, who wasn't home when she was shot.
Police say the woman called 911 Thursday morning to say she'd been shot once in the chest by a masked man.
Officers searched the neighborhood, aided by a helicopter and police dogs. Nearby schools were locked down most of the morning.
Young says the Whatcom County prosecutor's office will decide whether the woman will be charged with making a false report.
