NEW ALBANY, Ind. (AP) - Investigators aren't ready to say for certain what caused the deaths of a woman and her two children whose bodies were found in a southern Indiana creek last month.
"At this point, we don't have everything together to draw any real conclusions that we're going to release to the public," New Albany Maj. Keith Whitlow said Wednesday.
The nude bodies of 35-year-old Jaime Clutter, her 10-year-old son Brandon and 6-month-old daughter Katelyn were found March 13 in a creek near the New Albany apartment where the Clutter family had moved in December from Aberdeen, Wash.
Authorities previously said the children drowned but the cause of their mother's death remained undetermined. Floyd County Coroner Leslie Knable said last month that she found water in the lungs of all three during autopsies.
Knable said she is still awaiting the results of toxicology tests, but because it's difficult to determine death by drowning, it's possible the causes of death for all three may be listed as undetermined. Knable, who said she should close her investigation in about a week, told The Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky., ( http://cjky.it/Z3AGGd) that she expects the causes of death for the children and for Jamie Clutter will be the same.
Whitlow said New Albany police have interviewed several local people, but need to speak with people in Washington state.
Shortly after the bodies were discovered by a man who was crossing a bridge over the creek, police said Michael Clutter, Jamie's husband and the children's father, was not a suspect in their deaths.
Floyd County Prosecutor Keith Henderson said he wouldn't rule out the possibility of a murder-suicide, but Michael Clutter has maintained his wife was not depressed and would never kill their children or herself.
Michael Clutter's mother, Rosemary Valentine of Portland, Ind., told The Associated Press on Thursday that investigators continue to phone her son with theories.
"They come up with so many different stories every time they call him, except for the coroner down there," she said.
Neither Whitlow nor Greater Faith Church pastor J. Todd Nichols, who has been the family's spokesman, returned phone calls seeking comment Thursday.
