Father accused of hitting girl, 4, with belt

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - A Pierce County, Wash., man accused of hitting his 4-year-old daughter multiple times with a belt after she refused to eat her dinner has been charged with second-degree child assault.

The News Tribune says 37-year-old Marcellus White of Bonney Lake pleaded not guilty Tuesday.

Prosecutors allege he put the child in a cold bath for about a half hour Sunday to make the injuries less visible.

The girl's mother took her to Bonney Lake police on Monday and showed officers the welts on the child's left arm. She was taken to a hospital.

Prosecutors say White followed the mother and daughter to the police station and was booked into jail. Bail was set at $150,000.
