Wapato jail sergeant accused of embezzlement

YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - A jail sergeant for the city of Wapato is accused of embezzling more than $5,000 from the Wapato Youth Athletics League in 2011 when he served as the league's director.

KAPP reports ( http://bit.ly/123SBz9) Sgt. Bruce Benscoter appeared Thursday in a Yakima County Superior Court on theft charges. Police believe Benscoter stole more than $5,000 while leading the program.

KIMA reports ( http://bit.ly/123SMuq) he's on leave from his job with the Wapato Police Department for an internal investigation.

Benscoter has been released on bail pending a trial set for June.
